چکیده

Gluon field configurations with nonzero topological charge induce Pand CP-odd effects. Such configurations are likely to be produced during heavy ion collisions. In this article, I will argue that in the intense (electromagnetic) magnetic field produced in non-central heavy ion collisions, topological charge creates an electromagnetic current in the direction of the magnetic field. This is the Chiral Magnetic Effect. It leads to separation of positive from negative charge along the direction of the magnetic field. I will point out that this effect can be investigated experimentally with a charge correlation study and will refer to interesting data from the STAR collaboration.

Topologically induced local P and CP violation in hot QCD

Very stringent experimental bounds exist on the amount of P and CP violation in strong interactions. Nevertheless, the presence of non-Abelian topological solutions and the axial anomaly make the issue of CP invariance in QCD non-trivial (”the strong CP problem”). Even in the absence of a global P and CP violation the fluctuations of topological charge in the QCD vacuum are expected to play an ...

Experimental study of local strong parity violation in relativistic nuclear collisions

Parity-odd domains, corresponding to non-trivial topological solutions of the QCD vacuum, might be created in relativistic heavy ions collisions. These domains are predicted to lead to charge separation along the system orbital momentum of the system created in non-central collisions. Three-particle mixed harmonics azimuthal correlator is a P even observable but directly sensitive to the charge...

Modeling Magnetic Field in Heavy ion Collisions Using Two Different Nuclear Charge Density Distributions

By studying the properties of matter during heavy-ion collisions, a better understanding of the Quark-Gluon plasma is possible. One of the main areas of this study is the calculation of the magnetic field, particularly how the values of conductivity affects this field and how the field strength changes with proper time. In matching the theoretical calculations with results obtained in lab, two diffe...

Implications of CP-violating transitions in hot quark matter on heavy ion collisions

Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) predicts that topological charge changing transitions will take place in hot quark matter. Such transitions induce Pand CP-violating effects. We will show that in the presence of a magnetic field these transitions can separate quarks according to their electric charge along the direction of the magnetic field. This is the so-called Chiral Magnetic Effect. We will ar...

Electric charge separation in strong transient magnetic fields

We discuss various mechanisms for the creation of an asymmetric charge fluctuation with respect to the reaction plane among hadrons emitted in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We show that such mechanisms exist in both the hadronic gas and the partonic phases of quantum chromodynamics. The mechanisms considered here all require the presence of a strong magnetic field (the “chiral magnetic eff...
